“I wanted so badly for Daphnée to become an Enfant Soleil. She lives with pain every day, and it’s difficult for her—but it’s also what makes her stronger with each passing day.” — Mylène, Daphnée’s mother
An overwhelming first moment: when the expected gives way to the unexpected
The first contact between a mother and her newborn is indescribable, filled with unconditional love and tenderness. Mylène had been waiting for that moment with impatience, never imagining that the birth of her daughter would be marked by fear and uncertainty.
When she was born, Daphnée was not breathing. A moment no parent ever forgets. The unbearable wait. The terror of seeing her child deprived of oxygen. The medical team rushing to help the newborn breathe. And finally, the instant when Mylène can hold her daughter in her arms. Immense relief—quickly clouded by a new worry. Mylène notices that Daphnée’s small left arm and fingers are not like her right ones.
From that moment forward, life for this young family has revolved around medical appointments, specialized follow-ups in Québec City… and the ever-present unknown. Daphnée has a severe form of symbrachydactyly—a diagnosis as complex as its name. She lives with constant pain that prevents her from enjoying life like other children her age. Her hand is hypersensitive to temperature changes; even brief contact with something too hot or too cold can trigger intense pain. For now, medication is not an option, given the severity of her condition and her young age. Regular monitoring is essential as specialists search for solutions that could help ease her pain. Her parents, powerless, witness their daughter’s pain day and night. Their comfort cannot soothe her suffering. “I wish I could take her pain away and comfort her,” her mother confides.
At such a young age, Daphnée already faces immense challenges. Playing, feeding herself, moving around—every action requires effort. When she crawls, she must often stop to rest her painful hand. Her mother keeps her at home to protect her from injury.
A united family
Despite everything, Daphnée is a joyful, curious and determined child. She adapts to her reality with remarkable resilience. The possibility of an additional diagnosis—Poland syndrome, a rare condition that could also affect chest muscle development—adds to the family’s uncertainty. Each medical appointment becomes a search for answers and relief. Fortunately, the specialists at the Centre mère‑enfant Soleil care for Daphnée to the best of their ability, hoping that one day they will find a way to ease her pain.
Mylène and Brandon, Daphnée’s parents, are exhausted and worried about the future. Still, they move forward one day at a time, holding on to the hope that continued care, follow‑ups and research will lead to solutions. They dream of a life where Daphnée can grow, thrive and live without pain.
Illness has no place in a child’s life.
